#1 Bestselling Military Romance!
Goodreads Choice 2014 Nominee for Best Romance!
Ryan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn’t stop him wanting the one thing he can’t have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She’s the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself.
At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. His patrol undertakes the most dangerous missions a soldier can face. But no matter how far he runs, or how hard he fights, his need for Finlay won’t let go.
Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can’t live without her. But sometimes love isn’t enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can’t be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what’s left.
This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself.
This book is recommended for 18+ due to adult language and themes.
Please note K McCarthy is an Australian author and Australian spelling, language and slang has been used in this book.

Fighting Redemption edition by Kate McCarthy Maxann Dobson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I don’t like reading stories with excessive amounts of angst and drama over stupid things.
I’m talking about how both Ryan and Finlay were in love with each other for years, but couldn’t be together because Ryan kept thinking he wasn’t good enough blah blah blah and Finlay couldn’t properly move on with her life.
Also, the descriptive sex scene between Finlay and another guy was very distasteful and unneeded.
I’ve read all of Kate McCarthy’s books and loved them all except for this.
Fighting Redemption
By Kate McCarthy
4/5 stars
Finlay Tanner grew up with her brother Jake and his best friend Ryan Kendall, from the time she was in third grade until both Ryan and Jake left to join the Australian Army and later becoming SAS soldiers (highly-trained, special-ops). She became an environmental scientist and has been on several expeditions to Antarctica.
Fin is a cute, klutzy scientist with great friends and cousins who try to get her out and about more often and let her stay stuck in her world of work. She is also dating, Ian, who was her high school boyfriend and who is now a cop. Though they love each other, their relationship is strained. He keeps pressuring Fin for more and feels like he is never first in her life because of her job. But she is following her brother’s advice to always go after what she wants and to never let anything get in her way.
Ryan, though he is not a blood brother to Jake, they are brothers in every other sense of the word. They became friends (much to Ryan’s chagrin), they grew up together, they were in sports together, they joined the Army together, and they trained together, went through SAS selection together and went to combat in the Afghanistan War together.
Tragedies happen and worlds get flipped on their sides. Some turn away from their loved ones because of the guilt they feel and still other people turn to those they love in a common bond of loss. But eventually tragedies have a way of bringing people together, for better or for worse.
The writing was solid and the following are my personal opinions on why this well-loved book wasn’t a 5 star read for me.
It seems like the author did more telling of how their background was and how we should feel about it, instead of writing about it and allowing us to feel it and make those connections. For example, they both supposedly loved each other forever, but they didn’t have many scenes together where they actually built that deep friendship. There were only a few flashback scenes and I didn’t feel their connection or love for each other in those scenes. At one point she also says that she never trusted anyone as much as she did Ryan. To me that just felt all sorts of wrong. After he left for the Army, he totally ignored her for 6 years and made no contact. The first time they see each other, they border on ignoring each other. If anything, her brother Jake seems like the most trusted person. Also, I don’t like how Fin was in to guilt tripping Ryan. He had so much crap going on in his head, yet she was guilt tripping about more than just one thing. I didn’t like how she kept lamenting that she was enough for him to be able to leave his past behind and quit running. I’m also over stories where the hero purposely sabotages his relationship, because “it’s what’s best for the heroine” and “I’m not good enough for her.” I get that he has a crappy past, which I don’t think was explained soon enough to the reader for us to get the full effect of what he went through. It also felt somewhat disconnected.
5 ★★★★★'!!!
This one a book that really touched my heart. It was a one day read for me so that should tell you something. I loved every minute of it.
Fighting Redemption was such a wonderful book. It was AMAZING. It was TOUCHING. It was BEAUTIFUL. It was EMOTIONAL. Why I waited until now to read it I have no clue because I it is an absolute MUST READ!!
Okay so now that I have that out of the way let me tell you a little bit about the story. I won’t say much because I think having only a little about the story in the back of your mind will allow you to experience the book better. At least I found that to be true for me.
Fighting Redemption wasn’t just a story about the men that risk their lives to protect and defend their country and freedom. And it wasn’t just a simple love story. It is so much more. It is a story about friendships, bravery and sacrifice not only in war but within family and it is a story about strength and self-respect.
The beautiful main characters in this book are Ryan Kendall, Jake Tanner and Finlay Tanner. But I also fell in love with a secondary character Kyle Brooks. I can’t put my finger on why but he crept into my heart as well. Even though he was described as being made up of “nothing but rock solid muscle” he came across as a big teddy bear. He was that guy that loved to bust balls and flirt with the ladies but he was also the guy that was there for everyone when things got tough. And things got tough.
Ryan met Jake and Finlay at the beginning of one school year. Jake and Finlay were new to the school. They were all young, Finlay being the youngest. But when Fin literally stumbles into his life there was no turning back. Finlay took hold of his heart without even knowing it.
I loved Jake. He was always so protective of Finlay and wanted her to be happy. He was such a sweetheart.
And Finlay. Well she was just a simple girl. And a bit of a klutz. ) She just wanted to fall in love and live happily ever after. She was beautiful inside and out.
The thing is, Ryan’s family life had fallen apart. He experienced something in his young life that caused him emotional and physical pain. But it made him stronger and he became wonderful man.
Through his friendship with Jake, the Tanner’s became his family. And from there a family bond, like no other began. The brotherly love and loyalty that grew between Jake and Ryan was something that stayed strong throughout their late teenage years and followed them through their enlistment in the SAS Army.
But Ryan’s feelings towards Finlay grew, matured and filled his heart. Ryan loved her. He wanted to protect her and always keep her safe. But he knew that his future in the service wouldn’t allow for the type of relationship she deserved so he kept his feelings tucked away. But Finlay could feel it. She knew he had feelings for her but without ever hearing those words Fin lived her life, dated and moved on.
Now six years have passed and Jake and Ryan are returning home. Time causes change and all three have changed a lot. Fin has created a life for herself with her boyfriend Ian but it isn’t a life that is complete. Hmm I wonder why that is? And Ryan, he has experience things that has tested his bravery and his mental and physical strength. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is his love for Finlay.
After their return, so much happens with Finlay, Ryan and Jake. Some of it is painful and some of it is beautiful. Their lives will never be the same be that good or bad. But what will always be a constant for them is love, friendship and the inevitability of always being part of each other’s lives.
Ryan and Finlay’s relationship was one that will grab hold of your heart and not let go. The stages they go through and what they deal with is evident that fate is playing a part in it. It wasn’t easy. But how does that quote go…. “Nothing worth having is ever easy, and all the best things in life are the result of pain. In the end, that’s what makes the good things go very great, and that’s what makes it all worth the struggle.” This is so true for them.
❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
Sorry, I know I said I wouldn’t say much right….but I got carried away. If you haven’t read this book please give it a try. I highly recommend it. It is a story that had me thinking about things. About the families that are left behind of those that serve, about sacrifices people make and about all the good that come from all the amazing people in our armed services. ❤
I’ll leave you with one of my favorite parts in the story. Fin and Ryan are talking about when he will be leaving again and she has asked him to promise that he will be safe.
“You know I can’t promise you that.” You speak to me of love, yet you’ll walk away from me so easily to go and put your life on the line! Do you know how hard that is for me?” “I’m sorry.”
Ryan pulled her around the table and into the circle of him arms. “Every piece of me is in here.” He placed his palm flat on her chest, feeling her heart beat hard and steady beneath his fingers. He closed his eyes briefly at the beauty of it. “My breath, my heart, my life. I won’t ever leave you if you if you keep that safe inside of you.” ღ
As a person with a brother in the military I really hesitated at reading this, however, This was a FABULOUS Story
